Sharpening Enqury examples

Question:

Do you sharpen all paper Guillotine Blades to the same higher angle?

No. Guillotine blades must be sharp, and also sharp at the right angle. Higher angle sharpening must match the specified blade angle for the cutting machine model and cutting material density. If the pitch is too shallow or too steep, it can affect the cutting performance.

Answer:

Blades with small angles require less cutting strength compared to blades with larger angles. However, blades with small angles cannot remain strong in hard and flexible cutting materials; they will bend or eventually wear out. There is a great article about requirements to paper guillotine blade sharpening.

Question:

I was wondering if it is possible to get a quote for sharpening of a bench end guillotine blade, the blade is curved and is just over 50″ long. We are based in North Devon so would need it to be posted. So please could you let me know how that works and also a quote, please?

Here is a link to the sort of guillotine we have, ours is about 10 years old, but I assume it is roughly the same specification.

Answer:

I refer to your recent contact via our website, with regards sharpening your Bench Shear Blade. Yes, we can sharpen these for you at a cost of £80 per set. If you wished we could organize our carriers TNT to collect the blade from your premises and return them back to you within 7 working days. Obviously, there will be a charge for the collection which is unknown until we get the weight and parcel size. The return carriage will be £18.50.

Question:

I’ve got a sheet metal shear blade that’s completely dull. There is still a small spot in the middle that cuts (mostly folds the metal over instead of cutting). How do I prepare it to sharpen? Do I adjust the blades closer together or have to take the blades completely out?

Answer:

Cut quality is directly proportional to the sharpness of the shear blades. Have you checked to see if your shear blades have reversible edges? On a lot of shears you can reverse them, and then later turn them over, and finally reverse them again, giving a total of 4 cutting edges. If it is the case, then after you re-adjust them do not forget about clearance distance between your shear blades. However, if the blades have been flipped then you have to sharpen them.  You can send them to us and we will sharpen all 4 cutting edges, so you can flip/rotate the blades later.
